Low-Income Subsidy (Extra Help)

What is Extra Help?

Extra Help, also known as the Low-Income Subsidy (LIS), is a federal program that assists Medicare beneficiaries with limited income and resources in paying for their prescription drug costs. This program can help you save money on monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and co-payments related to your Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.

How Can Extra Help Benefit You?

If you qualify for Extra Help, you’ll receive assistance in paying for your Medicare Part D prescription drug costs. The amount of help you receive depends on your income and resource levels. Extra Help can:
  • Lower or eliminate your Part D monthly premium
  • Reduce your annual deductible
  • Decrease your co-payments for prescription drugs
This means you’ll have more financial flexibility to focus on your health and well-being.

How to Apply for Extra Help

You can apply for Extra Help online, by phone, or in person. To apply online, visit the SSA’s Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs page. You can also call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local Social Security office to apply in person.
